Week 6 (Module 6): Adab towards parents, neighbour & students
Adab towards parents
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents…” (Al-‘Isra’:23)
Allah (SWT) puts the responsibility of parents in the above verse next to singling Him out in worship, which really highlights the high status He has granted to our parents. In addition, when one of the companions asked the Prophet (SAW) about the deeds most beloved to Allah (SWT) after mentioning prayers at their mentioned times, he said that one's parents were decent and dutiful. (The Bukhari)
From: From Shaykh Mohammed Daniel's al-Adab al-Mufrad
1) Prefer them over everyone and everything.
2) Anticipate how you can make their life more comfortable, especially in old age.
3) Offer them opportunities to come closer to Allah e.g. inform them of lectures & take them if they agree.
4) Remember them often in your supplications.
5) Praise their efforts & achievements. After all, you are one of them!
6) Always start with them, when serving food, giving gifts etc.
7) Visit them regularly & enquire about their health.
8) Dress well, smell good and stand up for them when they enter your presence.
9) Call them with the most respectable titles, never by their first name.
10) When you greet them, kiss their hand, head etc.
We have to strive to attain an exemplary rank of adab with our parents. It is because, they have raised us with love. We need to remember, there is no perfect parents. But they are always doing the best for us, and that is what only matters. There is no amount of money that can reward what they have done for us. For me, I just want to make them happy. Whatever that will put a smile on their faces, I'll do it for them. I pray that all parents in this world will be placed in the highest place later. because they deserve nothing but the best.
Adab towards neighbour
Who is a neighbour of ours? Prophet Muhammad told us that a neighbour is not just the neighbour living next door, but also those living in all directions in up to 40 houses-effectively the entire neighborhood.
Islam finds a neighbor's rights to be highly important. A Muslim, no matter their faith, must be good to his/her neighbors. Maintaining these rights allows the individual and community to be happy & harmony.
“Serve God, and join not any partners with Him; and do good – to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess.” [Al Qur’an, al-Nisaa 4:36]
In this ayah, Allah commands us to do good to our neighbours eventhough they are strangers.
Some of the duties to our neighbors are:
- Help them when they ask for help.
- If he wants your relief, send him relief.
- By raising your building high without his permission, do not obstruct his air.
- Don't harass him at all,
- When he dies, you have to attend his funeral (and take part in burial arrangements)
- If a sin is committed, avoid it from being identified.
- Congratulate him if good fortune hits him,
- Grieve with compassion if a calamity hits him
Adab as a Student
In my opinion, as a students, muslim or not muslim, it is crucial for us to adopt adab as a students. When talking about student status, of course the teacher is involved. Students should take care of their manners with their teachers because of many reasons, among them because, they have poured all their energy to educate us, the students.
Manners When Sitting with a Teacher
- And not continuously disturb
- Avoiding extensive interrogation in front of an audience because it allows the student to delude himself
- Stated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ood, tell the audience as long as you can see that they are interested and then stop narrating to them when you see slackness in their eyes.
- Intention
- Goals Simple & Established
